Most-asked questions

Is Vietnam safe for British families?+

Yes. Violent crime against foreigners is rare. Petty theft (phone/bag snatches from scooters) is the main risk in HCMC and Hanoi — basic precautions handle it. Road safety is the genuine concern; a scooter lesson and helmets are non-negotiable.

How long can we stay on the 90-day e-visa?+

The e-visa gives 90 days multi-entry, so you can leave and re-enter within the validity. It cannot be extended in-country; for longer stays you convert to a TRC (employment, business or family sponsorship) before it expires.

What is the realistic monthly cost for a family of four?+

£3,400-£5,200 for a comfortable Western standard with two children in a mid-tier international school. Strip schools out and the same family lives well on £2,200-£3,200. London cost equivalent is roughly 2.5-3x.

Will my children integrate quickly?+

Yes, faster than the adults usually. International schools have constant rotation so new kids are normal, and Vietnamese children are warm and curious. Most British kids settle within 4-8 weeks. Teenagers (14+) find it harder than primary-age children.

Can I keep my UK job and work from Vietnam?+

Technically yes, and many people do. Practically: time zone (GMT+7), tax residence (183-day rule), employer permission and your professional indemnity cover all matter. Have the conversation with HR, your accountant and a specialist before you fly.

What about NHS access if we come back?+

You retain rights as a UK citizen but become ordinarily resident again only on return. Keep a UK address, register with a GP, and avoid letting NHS dental/optical lapse if you can. Plan to be insured privately for the first 3-6 months back while you re-establish.
